ASH #1 (2026) 'Fireline'

A fireline is a boundary cut through vegetation to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and this is my interpretation of that uneasy boundary between destruction and survival.

The painting is built around a divide. On one side, a landscape feels scorched, fragmented and damaged. On the other, something colder and more exposed remains. Between them sits the blue-green passage of the fireline, a temporary space between what has been destroyed and what might survive.

A patchwork of hot gold and red foils make glowing layers. Marks and scars run through the surface, some deliberately created and others buried beneath what came later.

I wanted it to feel less like a painting of fire and more like a painting after the fire.

Because fire leaves more than ash behind.
